Dear ,
Who do you think you are? “Your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room” Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon
I’m sure there is plenty said about Mr Bezos when he is not in the room, some good, some bad (after all, we’ve all had those all-important deliveries go awry!). But either way there is absolutely no confusion over what he or his company represents. Amazon is a global giant and he has built it on being sure of his purpose, his identity and what he can bring to the table – in other words, he has nailed his personal brand and therefore a rock-solid brand.

But why and how was he so sure of it? Well, he has mastered a leading skill that all entrepreneurs need and that is to be able to ride the rollercoaster that is running a business, taking on – and preparing for – the small waves and the big waves with the same enthusiasm and energy. He offers up a constant stability and consistent leadership even when the world dissolves in chaos around him. He never loses sight of his personal purpose and his brand remains true.
In these persistently turbulent times, it has certainly become crucial for both myself and other entrepreneurs to rely on our personal brand. Over the past few months we have had to show up as our best selves amidst the most challenging changing circumstances and doing so flawlessly requires us to dig deep and rely strongly on our personal brand. Those around us seek consistency and security, while the business we lead needs stability and clearly guided decision-making to progress and succeed. This all goes beyond a front-cover image; it starts from a deeper understanding of ourselves and the beliefs that guide us to become the leader we are for others and our business.
And while this may seem simple for a giant like Amazon, it does require enormous effort. For SMEs it can be even harder to stand fast when it feels as if external forces are pressuring you to be something you’re not and never set out to be in the first place. So, take time now to consider how you can begin to establish your personal brand and how you will stick to it.

Know yourself First of all, do not underestimate how important it is to really think about your personal brand and what it means to you. Think of it like building a house – you wouldn’t just start constructing, adding on bits of brick or wood or windows in an ad-hoc fashion – you’d think about whether the property could stand up straight, withstand the weather and still look good. So, laying the right, sturdy foundations for your personal brand is vital: understand your purpose and values, what motivates you and how do you see yourself in the world? This is the starting point for your identity: the origin of you, doing what you love and loving what you do.
If you’re struggling to get a grip on what your brand is, ask yourself these questions to get going:
- What makes you unique?
- What are you truly passionate about?
- What do you make a stand for?
- What are you naturally good at?
- What makes you frustrated ?
- What do you love to teach to others?
If you know what you want to portray and how you want people to see you, it will be more obvious to your customers as well as your investors. And in the long term, this investment in yourself will pay dividends for your company. Jeff Bezos, we’re coming to get ya!
Have a great month,
